Plastic disk (retainer) top of struts 850 1994

Has anyone ever replaced the retainer (plastic disk) on the top of the front struts on an 850? I know that the struts are OK, it's the plastics that need replacing. If so, what's involved in replacing them?

The strut mount breaks and the strut sqeaks a lot- I changed mine- got strut mount from IPD- about $40 to $50 a piece. You need a coil spring compresser as well. This was one of the hardest things I have done to my car. Very difficult to jack car and remove strut and spring assembly, even harder to get it compressed and back in after you relace the mount. If you ever have the struts replaced, always replace the strut mounts also. A poor design on Volvo's part. Unusual bolt and nut- had to use a crescent wrench and channellock pliers to undo the top of strut- Volvo makes a special tool for this. This is a difficult repair, even though it seems simple.

Do you mean the strut mount ? If it is the one, then the whole strut is needed to be out of the car. Then with the spring compressed, unscrew the 2 nuts on top of the strut mount in order to replace the strut mount.
