occasional growling noise when brake applied 850 1997

My 1997 850 T-5 wagon has been dealership maintained since it was purchased. Shortly before it had 60,000 miles it would occasionally make a growling noise when the brake was applied. You could feel it vibrate in the brake pedal as well. It was rather frightening to say the least! I took it into the dealer and requested the 60,000 mile service plus asked them to check out the brakes. Dealer comments on the service receipt read: Check grinding noise from brakes; we checked all brakes; pads look good about 80%; front rotors have a large lip but we did not duplicate any noise. A few days later, the wagon made the same noise again. Since it only did it every now and then and the dealer had said my brakes were ok, I ignored it. I figured the dealer would have to keep my wagon indefinitely and drive it everyday for no telling how long to 'duplicate' the noise. Now, at approximately 70,000 miles, I have noticed what I refer to as a wah-wah noise when I driving. Its a rythmic noise that sounds like it's coming my front left wheel in particular. It excels and slows with speed. It seems more noticeable when I am making a right turn. I have had my tires checked to make sure there was nothing wrong with them, like balancing, worn, etc. After reading some of the items posted on your site, I am now concerned my front rotors and possibly wheel bearings and complete hub assembly may need replacing. How costly is this on average through a dealer? Do you have any other suggestions? Help!

growling is normal abs modulation, can occur when braking on rough surfaces, your other symptoms are classic left wheel bearing noises. large rust ridge on rotors can cause a scraping noise. wheel bearings are usually 2.5 hrs. labor plus parts. dont forget 70k t-belt service

Your dealer would probably catch this, but what I thought was brakes growling on our S70 turned out to be vibration from a worn-out torque arm bushing.
