850's SRS-sensor location 850 1993

The SRS light on my '93 850 GLT (265K miles) lit recently. I'm told the car's computer has thrown a code indicating that my crash sensor needs replacing. That's an awfully expensive repair so I wanted to attempt it myself.

I've been given conflicting advice on the location of my driver's side crash sensor - either in my bumper or under my driver's seat. When I unbolted my seat the only thing I saw that might be related was a flat black box that seems to be more related to the power seat functions than anything else. I have no idea where the in-bumper sensor might be. Can you advise?

Thanks!

Kyle

    850's SRS-sensor , try cleaning the contacts... 850 1993

Many times that SRS light will come on because corrosion on the cable contacts has prevented proper signal information from flowing to the computer. Look under the carpet on the "hump" on the driver's side. The cable coming from the SRS sensor runs under the carpet on the driver's side of the hump and along that hump you'll see a yellow connector. Over the years different things get spilled on the carpet in that area and seep into the connector and allow corrosion to build up. Pull the connector apart and clean the contacts very good, then plug it back together and clear the SRS code from the DLC boxes under the hood (B5 is the SRS terminal) (http://www.volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.htm). See if this fixes your SRS problem before you go out and spend $1k on a new crash sensor. Good luck ....... Mike

The SRS crash sensor is located directly under the center console, roughly between the window switches and the arm rest. The console must be removed to access. The 200/700/900 series cars had them under the drivers seat. No Volvo has them in or around the bumper.

The SRS system uses accelerometers to detect fast deceleration to
determine when to trigger the air bag. I believe
they are in the center console. Data at www.alldatadiy.com has numerous
warnings about disconnecting power, etc. when working on this system.
Replacement is less then one hour labor (according to alldatadiy.com).
I'd let a delaer deal with it or at least get the official info on
    how to do it.

    Description of SRS:

The sensor module has twin electronic deceleration sensor elements connected to one microprocessor which calculates the deceleration of the car. Results from the two sensor elements are compared with each other and with default parameters stored in the sensor module memory, in order to eliminate incorrect calculations.

If both results show that parameters have been exceeded, a violent frontal collision is indicated, and the sensor module closes the seat belt tensioner, steering wheel airbag and passenger airbag circuits simultaneously. A current passes through the igniters activating the gas generators which inflate the airbags and tension the seat belts.

Airbag modules and pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners are activated simultaneously by the sensor module.

The entire SRS system is continuously monitored by the microprocessor in the sensor module. Should a system fault occur the sensor module stores information about its type and location. This facilitates fault-tracing.
