2001 volvo s60 idle problems and maybe fuel injection S60 2001

My wife and just purchased a 2001 Volvo S60, with about 88,000 miles. I know, how in the world did the previous owner put this many miles on in such a short time?
We fell in love with the car the moment we took it out on the road. PLus, being used, it was now in our price range.

Here is the dilema. Upon coming to a stop and waiting about 5-10 seconds, the car will fluctuate in its idle. I would say is moves between 1500 rpms and 500 rpms. Meanwhile, the car "twitches" or "jumps", minor, but noticable. Once releasing the brake the car then jerks abruptly and we're off and driving fine. Please help!

The idle problem seems to only exist while in "Drive".

another source of idle instability on that car with that milage may be the electronic trottle assembly. Get throttle inspected and to have it cleaned. Also the crankcase vent hose and nipple should be checked and cleaned if indicated.
    but do this first:
That car does have neutral control and to see if NC is the cause, place car in Drive once engine is fully warmed up and then hold it still with parking brake with no application of foot brake. Then depress foot brake. If the fluctutations in idle speed occur only with foot brake held then it is NC causing the problem. If while holding with parking brake it still does it but is worse if you touch throttle pedal and release it, then it is dirty throttle housing and blade causing the electronic throttling system difficulty in holding the throttle blade with enough stability to have smooth idle.

While MAF or throttle module are possibilities, more likely you have a valve body problem in the trans. The 01 automatic 5 cyl volvos have a system called "neutral control" It is supposed to seamlessly disengage the trans at stops and re-engage when you release the brake, for smoother idle. Symptoms of a faulty valve body include harsh engagement when brake is released, and a noticable clunk about 2 seconds after coming to a stop, and continued clunking or "twitching" as you called it. This feature was deleted on 02 models except for some early 02 non turbos.

Do you know how much a repair like this costs?
Thank you very much for your insight!

If that's it......? Labor will be.... S60 2001

5.0 hours plus parts according to TNN 43-38 with non-turbo cars built before 1/02.

Any dealer has access to this info in VEN (dealers intranet network).

      2001 Thank You Bill W S60 2001

Thank you very much Bill! you have described exactly, I repeat exactly the same symptoms that my early(January) 2002 V70 non turbo is exhibiting. It has done this since day one and the Volvo dealer cannot figure it out!

Bill, is there a technical service bulletin that I can refer to so that the Volvo dealer can fix this? I love my V70 but this transmission concern has been
a constant source of irritation since day one. I have been putting up this conditon for all of the 23,000 miles that I have put on this car. Other than that I love this car but I can't stand the Bucking, Jerking that the transmission makes and I always knew that it wasn't right.

        2001 Thank You Bill W S60 2001

The feature that takes trans out of gear was dropped during the 2002 model year but not at first of year. If Neutral control is the source then it will not do it with parking brake set while in D with foot off brake pedal. The feature requires that foot brake pedal be depressed some distance in order for trans to go to neutral.

    Dealer only S60 2001

Like it or not, the ONLY place that can accurately diagnose and repair that car is a dealer as it needs their Vadis PC and info base.

It's likely to be either a MAF meter and/or throttle unit.
