It's me again--thanks for your help 850 1995

Hi guys, I wrote on Friday about the results of my diagnostic. Basically big price tag ($1500) from the dealer to fix a catalytic convertor and 2 oxygen sensors.
Thanks for your reponses so far......

I picked up the car at the dealer and now it's sitting in front of my house..waiting. Not sure what to do. I talked to my parents (I'm just out of school..) and they suggested either fix it at the dealer or donate it to charity (we were thinking about getting rid of the car anyways in the spring).

But I'm wondering about a second opinion. Basically the dealer said nothing about the structure of the exhaust system--when I look at the car the tailpipe is sagging and they didn't seem to mention that. I'm wondering if they've missed something, but I always thought the dealer was the Gold Standard.

My question: Should I take it somewhere else? I'm in Baltimore and don't know of any places that can fix a Volvo properly. What do you guys think about commercial places like Speedy or Jiffy Lube? What is the quality of their exhaust system work?

The overall picture here is that I don't want to keep pouring money into my car if we're thinking about getting rid of it w/in a year anyway. Just last month I put in a new starter. The car has 216K on it.

Thanks again for your responses so far. You guys are a big help.

I forget, what's wrong with your cat conv? Does it leak or was their a fault code that said it was NG?

Why did someone want to replace both O2 sensors? Do you know what fault codes were read?

As for dealers, the problem is that (unfortunately, like all places really) they have good and bad techs. Not everyone working at every auto repair place is good at what they're doing. Sometimes your car can be dispatched to "the shop idiot".
You can request that you only want their best Master tech to work on your car BUT few people know that or bother asking.
Now that a service writer at that dealership told you that, even if mis-diagnosed that writer is going to stand by those words or he too will look foolish changing his story.

SO, is there another Volvo dealer in your area? If so, I'd advise taking it there BUT this time, request that a Volvo master tech works on it.

Another option, a good Volvo independant shop that has techs experienced with newer Volvos (rare in these parts)?

    Where in Balto. are you?
There's Midas in Owings Mills that is reasonable.
I took an Audi quattro for complete exhaust and they were the least expensive around!
Call and ask. They should look and give estimate for work needed.
    Speak to "Dan".
    They do custom work too.
    HTH.
