My 2000 C70 LPT has an intermittant "Check Engine" light coming on. The Dealer said that the MAF was the cause and has to be replaced. The vehicle has 54,000 on it. How long is a MAF suppose to last? What should I expect if I wait a few months before replacing it? Is replacement a DIY?

    Hey Butchman,

    Blup and I got the same thing a few months back.
    CEL comes and goes and usually goes out a short time after you get gas. Right!

    It's the MAF. See if you get a P1171 on a generic code
    reader like an Equus 3100. I bet the MAF's life span is about 4 to 5 years.
    We mail ordered ours for about $162. and popped it in. If you wish to do this I can supply you with the steps. It's very easy. I will post a reminder so when people do a search this will come up.

      Add me to the club.
      Dealer hooked me up to VADIS and got MAF codes just this PM.
      He cleared the memory but CEL was right back within 20 miles.
      I'll have it done Fri. as I have just 84 days left on 4 yr. warr. (and <30,000 mi.!)

      VADIS printout shows -- Symptom Area 28
      CM260A Long-term fuel trip. Upper limit; bank 1 Upp;
      CM261A Long-term fuel trip. Upper limit; bank 1 Upp;

      Service dude said he's seeing more MAF replacements on poorly maintained cars and the 1999's are starting to come in fast, but I ain't in that category as I'm ahead of most service interval requirements (+ very low mi. + a 2000). Also: I hate having to ask for a "favor" by having codes read when CEL lit!

      I have to fill up again, but maybe I'm experiencing better MPG while the CEL is on? I know this can be very variable, but I usually max out at the high 26's and my last tank was substantially higher.

      rd,
      I have already ordered a new MAF for $167.00 and the mechanic at the dealer showed me how to install it. They pulled the same code on it twice in the past week and it was the MAF. I don't recall what the code was. I just had the dealer do a "goodwill" replacement on a driver's side window regulator. It was out of warranty by 4,000 miles.
