Check engine light keeps coming on S70

Reaseaching this for a friend with a '98 S70, 5 cylinder...

He claims he's had the car back to the dealer three times for the check engine light... even a Volvo tech from out of state came in to check things. They charge him $300 each time for the priveledge of not fixing this problem.

He has heard that others S70 owners are having this situation.

Is there some thread about this? Is it a common problem?

Seems to me the dealer knows the cause, but can't find the problem. Ask you friend a few simple things. Does he refill the gas with the engine running? Ask the dealer if the OBD code indicates a vacuum leak. My bet is vacuum leak being sensed in fuel recirculation system. Ask dealer to check the canister hoses for cracks. Since it is a '98, they are probably cracked depending on climate. Good luck!

Bru's question is key to resolving this issue. You can get hundreds or even thousands of questions or suggestions about replacing particular components, but until you get some DETAIL about why that check engine light is going on, you're shooting in the dark.

Your car's computer actually stores some information about what it thinks is wrong, and you can retrieve this information by hooking up a code reader tool. That is what Bru is referring to when he asks about On Board Diagnostics (OBD). You'll usually here it referred to as version two (OBDII) of this computer/code reader interface.

Chances are good that the dealer recorded the prior error codes on the service invoice. Get that information and report back here.
