engine problem while on trip V70-XC70 2002

My wife took our 2002 V70 on a road trip with the kids. She's in rural Indiana, and a yellow exclamation point came on the dash, and the message center reads "Engine system service required". She called roadside assistance and they told her to drive to Dayton, Ohio to the Volvo dealer there, which is about an hour away, but they couldn't tell her if the car was safe to drive. First, does anyone know what that message means? It's not that it's time for regular service, the car's at just over 10k and I had the oil changed less than 3k ago, plus the next scheduled service is at 15k anyway. Second, isn't roadside assistance supposed to do more than tell you to drive to a dealer, even if that would harm the engine? I thought if you were on a trip they were supposed to pick up the car, get it fixed, and provide you with a car in the meantime. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. Turns out it was the gas cap, which I had tightened to 3 clicks as recommended by Volvo when I filled up the tank before she left. Apparently it should be tightened to 6 or more clicks.

The "engine system service required" message indicates a minor problem with emission system or other related systems. This message is no reason to panic. More serious faults will indicate "emission service required, trans service required, or loww coolant, stop engine. It should be safe to drive to a dealer. Sometimes switching off and restarting will reboot things and the message will disappear. One possible common cause of this message is the brake pedal position sensor.

There is a fault in the emission system. If the car is running fine then it is probably ok to drive. Go to your local Volvo dealer so they can diagnose the problem (if any).
