OVERHEATING !!!!! PLEASE HELP !!!!!! S80 2000

I recently purchased a used 2000 S80 T6. I have had it for a few days now, and I absolutely love it, it drives and feels wonderful. Here is my problem. I have never been above normal (half way) on my temp gauge, but today as I had my girlfriend wait in the car while I went into Blockbuster (the car remained on) it proceeded to overheat. I don't mean just a little, I mean "turn of the car, gauge is in the red" overheat. I let it cool down for a while and then proceeded to drive it again. After watching it for a while, I concluded that while driving and brief stops (traffic lights) the car was fine, but if you stopped for a while (5-10 minutes) the temp would start to rise. This led me to believe that the problem was only that the radiator fan sucked (or did not suck, actually), was crappy. Has this happened to anyone else, what should I do? Is my diagnosis right? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
-J.P.

    OVERHEATING !!!!! PLEASE HELP !!!!!! S80 2000

Earlier this summer I had the same thing happen to me as you described. I also have a Volvo S80 T6. Turns out it was the radiator fan which could have potentially caused extreme damage to the engine if I had not had it repaired. My best advice is getting to a dealer A.S.A.P.

It might be not the radiator, but the faulty thermostat. I do not know, though, just an idea. That's what went wrong with my vehicle once ('97 855 GLT).

My overheating problem in the same model as yours was caused by a faulty radiator fan controller, which is only available as part of the complete fan assembly.

It would work great most of the time. But, when it wasn't working, the gauge would go into the red and the A/C would go out. It happened almost predominately during slow/parked engine running. At speed the problem would usually resolve itself. It is most likely the fan, but there is a slight chance it is the thermostat. Have your dealer check both, as the thermostat is infinitely cheaper than the fan (if you're paying for the repair).

      Good luck.

        Hi,
Thanks for all of your responses. I had it looked at and it turned out to be the radiator fan. Had to get the whole thing replaced, but since then, no problems. Thanks again
