Serious Upper Motor Mount Vibration Problems 850

My mechanic told me I needed to replace the upper motor mount on my 96 Volvo 850 Turbo (70000 miles). He replaced it with the yellow donut IPD? polyurethane ones. My car is definitely vibrating/shaking a lot more than before. When the turbo kicks in the vibration is really bad. When I go up hills my car sounds like a tractor, or some souped up Honda with the annoying exhaust sound. I can definitely say I don't enjoy driving this car as much anymore. My mechanic test drove it and he tells me the sound is normal. My wife agrees with me that there definitely is more noise than before.

I also have a 94 Volvo 850 Turbo with the original rubber upper mount. The car is very quiet, makes no vibrating/roaring noises. My 96 Volvo was also very quiet before the motor mount change.

Is there anyway to tell if the IPD motor mounts were improperly installed? I can't figure out what is going on. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I am at my wits end.

look at the mount on both sides, there is a arrow on both halfs that should be pointed in the same direction, i believe they point to the firewall.

i also have the poly mount and installed it myself, my car has slightly more vibration, but makes absoloutly no more noise than the stock mount made.

i will check my car to see where the arrows are pointing and reply back.

Thank you for your reply! I looked at the arrows, both of them point in the same direction - almost horizontally towards the engine side. They are pointing pointing downwards a little ( let's say 8 o'clock, or 4 o'clock) depending on which one you look at. Which way are they supposed to point if properly installed?

I also checked the upper bar braces that hold the yellow bushings in place. They move left and right slightly if I move them, i.e. they are not fixed to allow no movement. The nut is very secure, and I can't stop the left to right movement. Do your upper bars move left and right slightly also? Maybe this is normal.

      Thanks again!

mine definatly do not point to the engine they are facing the firewall. The poly mount does not have direct center bolt hole it is a concentric set up and depending on the way it is installed the center mount hole in the poly mount can be off center either slighty aft or fwd. You can contact IPD and they will email you a PDF file with installation instructions. this is where i got my directions from and they are very descriptive as to which way the arrows point.

        mine point to the firewall

as for the bracket attached to the firewall, yes it will move left and right, it has a rubber mount to thte firwall so there is some play allowed in there.

Serious Upper Motor Mount Vibration Problems - Lower mount problem??? 850

After reading some more of the posts here it looks like my problem may be the lower engine mounts. Apparently the harsh grinding / growling noise on acceleration from a stop, and the diminished turbo performance can be caused by the engine block metal hitting the metal below because of worn mounts.

The really odd thing is that this all started happening after the UPPER mount bushings were replaced. So I figured the IPD polyurethane upper mounts were to blame. I will have my Volvo mechanic look over my lower engine mounts too. If the lower engine mounts are OK, then I will have him replace the bushings with the original rubber bushings.

Has anyone else had problems with their lower mount? Was the car noisy/harsh on acceleration?
