S40 engine fuel control warning light? S40-V40 2001

I drive an 2001 S40 2.0T, and it has been operating without flaws
for 50,000 km.
Now there is a warning light in the panel (looks like a car engine)
that keeps turning on and then off every 2-3 days.

Previously it had been turning on/off every 2 months. The Volvo service guy
mentioned that it may be some fuel mixture sensor that is going bad,
and the fix could cost US$400 to replace the sensor.

The car gas consumption is 9.7L/100km on octane95 fuel when driving
at 120-140km/h, and goes down to 11.7L/100km when driving in the city.

Should I rush to have this problem fixed, or is this a minor problem?

Thanks,
Sergio

    S40 'check engine' light? S40-V40 2001

That's your "check engine" light (US term) and means that you have a problem with your fuel/ignition system. One needs to have the code(s) read first and go from there. At a dealer, it's read by their Vadis PC and I don't know if a generic scan tool will read that or not. I can't assume anything more until knowing what codes are present.
