Resonant Exhaust sound? 850

I have a friend with a ‘98 850 (non turbo). She is getting the check engine light code for sparkplug misfire. We have changed the plugs twice, and it still comes on.

The only new symptom is a very resonant exhaust sound. When she is sitting at a red light (Trans in DRIVE, and foot on brake), the exhaust sound makes your ears and head feel like they are inside a large pipe organ.

Of course, a guy would probably like that sound, but a girl does not! Do these two things have a connection? Could it be a Catalytic Converter problem or something with the emission system? thanks

    Did you check for spark from all of the wires?? Plugs might not be getting a spark.

      Well, I had a good volvo mechanic check it out for her, and my suspicions were correct. The Cat Coverter is bad. Her check engine light gave a code for rich fuel mixture, which makes sense to me for a bad Cat. Sam, we'll check the plug wires more carefully. They look OK, but it might be something that is not easily seen. Bad wires could cause fuel to get into the Cat, which would deteriorate or explode the innards and result in the situation we now have.
