Trailer wiring V70-XC70 2001

Hi All,

Had a search through the archives, and didn't see much chattering about this subject for recent V70s.

I'm looking to equip my 2001 V70XC with a some trailer wiring, and would appreciate advice if anyone out there has any to offer! Mainly interested in towing a tent trailer with a standard RV 7way round connector, with occasional use of some 4way flat trailers.

I'm headed in to the dealer to see what they have to offer, which is a "harness" P/N 8633886 for $82.84, and a "converter" P/N 8633880 for $105.73
Looking in the spare tire area, I see an extra connector or two off the factory harness. If the factory converter plugs into this connector, I'd be more inclined to spend the extra $$ not to be mangling my wiring by pressing scotch locks on everything. Anyone have experience with these factory accessories?

How about connector housings? I usually just dangle a 4way flat, but this time I'd like to do the job with a bracket attached somewhere...

Thanks in advance!

Greg

    Trailer wiring V70-XC70 2001

I just completed wiring my 1999 V70. I also have it set up for trailer brakes.
I bought the dealer wiring kit and then bought a seperate 3 to 2 wire converter.
Installation was straight forward. I wired the brake wires directly to battery and controller.

Most people want those costly adaptors that simply plug in and look nice BUT they're very expensive for what they are IMHO.
You can accomplish the same thing by using a universal trailer harness convertor for less than $20 from any parts store. There are only a few wires and it's not hard to wire using a test light.

Search this site, I wired my 2001 with an aftermarket plug into the factory wiring you are talking about and at the time I posted the wiring color code here. I purchased at Canadian Tire (in Canada) a plug with the 7 pin standard and a molded 4 pin beside it. Nice unit, I did it this way because Volvo's unit does not allow for electric brakes. The only thing to remember is to buy a 4 to 3 wire converter that powers from the battery and therefore isolates the car wiring.

        Hi Norm,

I looked, but didn't find anything under "Norm" or containing any juicy key words. Good idea though, I'll buzz out that connector and make up my own dongle. If you still have a link to your original post, that would be great - otherwise, no biggie...

I'm planning on bringing the trailer battery charge line from the (right) rear cigarette lighter. Did you do this, or did you tie into the fuse panel in the left rear?

        Thanks for the advice!

        Greg

Greg, I think this is the info.

Blue +12V in key position II via fuse 11D/15
Red +12V at all times via fuse 11D/9
Yel from brake light relay. +12V with brakes applied.
Pink rear fog light (may require software to activate)
          Black Ground
          Gray R parking light
Grn-wht R directional (connects directly to lamp socket)
Green L directional (connects directly to lamp socket)
          White L parking light
Blue Tail lights (connects directly to lamp socket)

As for charging, do not run it off of the cigarette plug or fuse pannel IMO. The battery can draw quite a load, run the wire straight from the volvo battery with a fuse, I think you need a 20amp fuse.

          Norm
