I have a '96 850R that I bought new. The heated seats were working just fine until I brought the car to the local dealer regarding Volvo recall on the wiring system for the seats. They are now not working. I called the dealership and was told that the seats are temperature sensitive to outdoor temperature (so I need to wait till winter to find out whether they're really working or not). That sounds too fantastic to me. Does anybody out there know whether that's true? Also,does anybody know a good detail shop for engine wash in the Seattle area?

    I finally called Volvo Customer Service directly and was told that the heated seats only worked when ambient temperature is above 54F. So, you guys are right. Thanks for the postings. Guess I have to wait till winter to find out. Shouldn't have that recall done!

    Recall is for BFB Syndrome 850 1996

    My dealer friend told me that the recall was really only intended for people with BFB syndrome (big fat butt). Normal weight people won't have a problem with the heaters if left alone. They do reduce the heating of the seats with the recall by installing a different temperature sensor in the seats.

    The recall temp sensors sense ambient cabin temperature, and won't come on above 54 deg. Also, they won't get as hot, and will switch off sooner.

      That pretty much sums up my experience after getting the recall work done. The performance of the seat heaters was quite good before the recall work, and is average to substandard now. I suppose they won't catch on fire now, but I miss the good warmth that they used to provide. The difference seems to be more pronounced on the passenger side than on the driver's side.

    Not sure about your '96 but it's definitely true for my '98. I didn't believe the dealer at first either but have since found out that it's true. Mine will heat up when ambient temps are in the low 50's. A Volvo tech later confirmed this for me after I learned it firsthand. He told me they'll only function under 54°F.

      Just as a follow up , I left work yesterday and flipped on the seat heater. It came on but not very warm--it was 73 degrees outside. So, it does work over 54 just not as warm when it is hot outside.

      Reading the previous posts however, this seems to only affect the recalled units. . .

      I have a 1993 glt. Must have made some changes but it DEFINATELY works above 52 - 54 degrees, thankfully!

    I live in San Francisco which isn't too much different than Seattle temperature wise. I would be suspect of their reasoning on the temperature ratio. I haven't tried them in 90 degree heat, but they always come on when I turn them on.
