How hard is it to change the trans fluid? 850

I checked my trans fluid and it looks old. How hard is it to change the trans fluid and what parts/ supplies do you need? Are there any tricks to doing it?

Thanks,
Jeff

Have you seen the flush kit from IPD for 850/70? New product in my latest IPD newsletter - ipdusa.com

Have a look at Bay 13 (great resource) and check out the alternate procedure at the end. http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/Transflush.htm

I think a 1/2" ID hose will do the trick and if you want to flush out the cooler, you can blow into the top hole with the hose out to force the cooler contents into the transmission sump.
Consider having a spare hose clip on hand. They have been known to break on removal. I would also suggest using Amsoil ATF or Mobil 1 ATF (both good synthetics) as long as you are taking the trouble to change it. It will last MUCH longer without deteriorating.

Easy 850

Hi Jeff,

Here is what I did,

Disconnect upper transmission cooling hose (careful about the o-ring inside). You may need a $15 tool that opens the c-clip (right terminology?)

Connect a clear plastic pipe with 3/8 inner diameter (ID) (Hardware store) to it and put the end inside a collection pan.

Start car and collect two quarts or less, definitely right at the bubble (very important!) start to appear on the fluid flow, otherwise air going into the system will damage your transmission.

Turn car off.

Repeat this process until fluid is clear and shiny.

Upper cooling hose is the easiest way to change fluid. However, the fluid in the radiator cannot be accessed. To get that fluid circulating, I suggest, after replacing and adding the 1st batch of fluid, re-connect the cooling hose back to the radiator and run the car. Next, remove the 2nd batch of fluid and so on and so forth. I reconnected the hose without the clamp and it did not pop out of the radiator while the car ran for a minute.
