How to Add Freon to AC? (1999 S70) S70 1999

Greetings All,

Where can I find instructions for adding freon to the AC system of a 1999 S70? I understand that I need to connect to the low pressure side of the system, but that's about it. Any tips?

Thanks,
Bill

Low pressure tap is behind the right front headlight, with a 20mm weather cap marked "6 nm max" (a torque setting).

You re-charge with RC134A for $6/lb at Autozone, $15/lb if you get the charge with compressor oil, seal conditioner and stop leak. You'll also need to buy the fill hose if you don't already have one. Follow directions on the can.

Note other recent posts along these lines here, including one from me this weekend. There is a correct amount of refrigerant that should be in the system (1.63lbs) but you can't tell whether you have the right amount from a pressure gauge, etc. The only way to know is to evacuate the system, and put in the specified amount. Overcharging the system also inhibits cooling.

For the moment, since my machine was cycling on-off every 5 seconds, I assumed low refrigerant (the dreaded evaporator leak, no doubt) and dumped in the $15 can....then made an appointment later this month with my indy Volvo tech.

Get a charging kit from your local autoparts store that comes with charging hose, pressure gage and can of freon. Comes with instructions. Don't overcharge the system as overcharge is like low charge. Use a small can of freon like 4-6oz initially, rather than the 12oz can, add another small can if needed. Full system takes about 17oz of refrigerant total.
Car needs to be on, with ac on at fullblast and then you connect the hose with the freon to low pressure port.
If the recharge doesn't last, then you have a leak.
