help headlights wont work 850 1996

went ou this evening to drive home and started car and headlights will not go on. this is nuts because the headlights on this car never turn off. when i turn all lights on including dash nothing, if i go to flip high beams on they work only if you hold it in place. parking lights everything fine. the headlight dummy light on dash dose not light up. any one know whats up? caint go get my car till the sun comes up. thanks kelly in NJ.

    sounds like a bad switch in the dash. remove the switch and check for 12v in the harness, try jumping the wires in the harness behind the switch and see it the lights work, if so it is the switch.

      Volvo at one time did have a service bulletin on the headlight switches. My 97 was included, not sure if the 96 falls into this. Worth a look though.

    Probably need a new headlight switch. See if the lights flicker when you push the switch inword. It's a common problem and a local dealer should stock the part.

      And it's not expensive - I paid $20 for mine.
