ABS V70-XC70 1998

I have a 1998 V70 GLT with about 88,000 miles. The ABS pump has for the last six months or so beenmaking a rather loud jet engine-ish whine when running (much louder than on it stablemate Saab. Last week, the whine mutated into a whine with marbles rolling around. the ABS still functions, but wanted to know if anyone else has heard this on their wagons.

Are you sure you're talking about the ABS pump or the air pump.
The air pump makes a whining noise when injecting air into the exhaust. This whining only happens after a cold start and disappears after a minute or two when the engine reaches its normal operating temperature.

This unit sits just under the driverside headlamp assy (down low). Being my first Volvo, i *assumed* that it was the ABS pump. It sounded like the one (but much noiser) in my Saabs. AllData was not much help, either. No idiot lights, no errors, nothing but a really bad noise that comes and goes.

you're talking about the air pump.
The whining noise is normal, the info it's in your manual.

I believe it is the air pump. Comes on on cold start as mentioned earlier. The whining noise is normal, but not the marble grinding sound.

That noise is indicitive to the Air Pump going bad. You could seize it up at any time. I would have it looked at ASAP, so not to damage the engine if the belt breaks....

I don't know what a belt breaking(timing belt?) has to do with the air pump noise. Failure of the pump will only cause the check engine light to come on and failure of a smog test (california for sure) Has no effect on performance.

              Certainly not an "ASAP" problem.
