Motronic + ECU Upgrade Problems

I received my upgraded ECU on 3 July for my 1998 V70 T5, Manual 5-speed. I installed it and headed out to the Interstate for a test run. From a 25 MPH roll in second gear, I firmly pushed the pedal to the floor.

I watched the RPMs rise quickly.
I watched the MPH rise quickly.
I watched the boost go above 10psi (like never before) and quickly dance around 14 PSI.
I felt the waste gate open and the power fall off (no surprise there).
I watched the "CHECK ENGINE" light illuminate (Big surprise there) and remain illuminated.

Repeated the same process today; same result, but this time the "CHECK ENGINE" light flickered a bit before remaining lit.
I suspected that I was piling fault codes on top of fault codes.
I do not have an OBD-II Code Reader, but I was due for a service anyway, so will let my mechanic tell me what the codes were.

More to the point, is this a typical scenario right after an upgrade? I would hate to think that I would have to deal with a "CHECK ENGINE" light every time I go into the higher boost ranges.

Any ideas out there in Brickland?

Motronic + ECU Upgrade Problems

Dave,

Did you get this sorted out yet? And have you noticed any improvement in performance? I have been debating whether or not to do this to my 1998 S70 T5 5spd...

Motronic + ECU Upgrade Problems

Alex,

The code was read today as a misfire in Nr 1 cylinder; no problem with wastegate settings. The upcoming 90,000 mile service will change the plugs, and I will see how it goes from there. That is when I will have the Sport Exhaust installed as well, so I am looking forward to the "Pleasing Note" which IPD advertises.

As far as your getting the upgrade .... entirely up to you. You can't go to super-boost all the time (although it is tempting), but when you need to get up to Interstate speed really quickly ..... my God, she does fly!!!! I have no regrets, and I know it will only get better. I would suggest giving Scott Hart a call at IPD; he is a super fellow and will answer all your questions.
800-444-6473 work

The best part is that you can send it back if you don't like it.

Motronic + ECU Upgrade Problems

I'd call whoever sold you the upgraded ECU (IPD?) BUT too much boost WILL cause codes to appear and thus, the dreaded check-engine light.

I'd check all your vacuum hoses to be sure that you're not driving with any that leak.

If IPD, being that they sell many of those, I'm sure that theres shouldn't normally cause an over-boost condition as that'd be a big problem for them.

Motronic + ECU Upgrade Problems

Scott at IPD has been working with me on this. We think one possibility was misfiring at higher boost ranges due to old plugs. Sufficient misfires will also cause a "C.E." light.

Once solved, I will post the close-out message here.

Thanks to all who have replied.

'plugs'

.......a "long shot" IMHO BUT replace the plugs with OEM Volvo plugs as they cause NO problems in any Volvo normally. I never try switching plugs to another brand/type whenever trying to solve a drivability or emisions related problem.
OEM plugs usually go well over 30K miles w/o any problems.

Yes, misfiring plugs will cause the CE light with misfire codes. If it's overboosting, you'll have different codes which will indicate that.
