Oil Change! 850

Dear All

I was wondering about changing my oil, I have read many threads on this site about the use of synthetic oil - anyone got any advice from experience. My car has 117, 000 miles and looking at the service history has had oil changes every 5000 miles but not synthetic.

Also can I do this without jacking up the car? What kind of socket do I need for the sump plug? I can't get aluminium washers here in Romania so could I use the old one?

I'll use a MAN filter as it has a non return valve. At least I think that is what the ball bearing and spring thing are inside it.

Thanks

is it a turbo, change the oil atleast every 3000 miles instead if you use regular non-syn oil.

I use Mobil1 and change every 90-120 days regardless of mileage, may be overkill but i take it as added insurance, I have a 97 GLT Turbo.

i have reused the washer with no problem, you need to jack it up some because mst drain pans will not slide under the car.

Surprised that you can find Mann filters and synthetic oil, but not the lowest tech component, aluminum washers. Volvo's filters are made by Mann, just be sure to get the right one.

Anyway, I would not re-use the washer nor would I be brave enough to begin using synthetic oil on a Volvo with 117k in Romania. If the supply of aluminum drain plug washers is a problem, main seals and cam gaskets might be, too. If you have any marginal seals or gaskets, synthetic oil will find its way around them!

BTW, FEDEX will deliver in Romania.

My old Saab mechanic would insist on using copper washers on the Volvo, the problem is that they are about as hard as the 5 cylinder's oil pan casting, so they won't crush. So there was always a slight drip. Love the old geezer, I just can't take my cars to him any more!

Make sure you get the right torque specs. for the sump plug, particularly if you are re-using the washer, as it might not seal properly and you might over tighten to stop the drip.I believe it is possible to crack the sump if you over tighten.

Let me know if you need the specs, I can get them or someone might post here.

      Rick.
