1.7 volvo engine problem - PLEASE HELP? 1990

Dear ALL,

My partner has a Renault 5 - 1.7 Monaco with a Weber 32 DRT carburetor.

Which i ahve been told is a VOLVO engine!!! hence my post on here.

The car broke down over 4 weeks ago now, it sounded like it was running on three cylinders, lots of smoke coming out of the exhaust and when the spark plugs were removed they are covered in oil, BUT it had very good compression! Smoke alos was back fireing up and out of the top of the carb! when it failed to start.

So I changed the head for a re-con one and have given it a full service, NOW when I start her up again it still smokes a little and when driven smokes a lot! When the accelerator is pressed the car holds back then accelerates with a lot of smoke, when the engine is turned off the engine keeps on running???
And still smoke fires up and out of the top of the carb! when it fails to start.
Basicaly nothing has changed having spent many hours under the bonnet.

Please can some engine nut help me, I am at my wits end with this.

PS I have checked the timing!

Much appreciated.

Feel free to e-mail me direct.

thanks

    1.7 Renault engine problem ....... 1990

I think that your info is incorrect. The US never saw those engines in Volvos BUT I do know that some Euro Volvos (400 series?) used Renault engines, not Renaults using Volvo engines. You car probably has a Renault engine, probably the same 1.7 liter that Renault used in the cars that AMC once imported here called Alliances and Encores in the early-mid 80s.
US Volvos havent used carbs since about '71 here (all FI) so you might do better by seeking out Euro forums that specialize in Renaults, assuming that they exist?

1.7 Renault engine problem .......REPLY 1990

I am not incorrect then as Volvo 400 series use the same engine as mine in the UK but with fuel injection and only in Euro land! I know that! hence the reason for posting a note on here BUT i did'nty realize this was just in the USA.

I also realize it is not a carburetor problem again hence why I posted a note on this forum as I thought it might be an engine problem??? No worries I have also yesterday sourced a UK problem web site for this type of engine.

Thanks for pointing out the apparent.

      Your for law and order

      Charlie

1.7 Renault engine problem relating to a Renault....... 1990

No offence towards anyone here but all I was saying is that it's not really a true Volvo engine (it IS made by Renault) AND he's got a Renault so things wouldn't be exactly like Volvo 400, especially a FI 400.

1.7 Renault engine problem relating to a Renault....... 1990

          Hi all,

I am i both camps here. I have own the Volvo 300 and 400 series which do use renault engines and then volvo do a make over on them for their use. The 360 series used the beefy engine out of the 260.

Just for further info Perguet/renualt/Volvo also co-produced the unit that went into the v6 760's.

Anyway i would ask this question on the 300 forum of the Volvo owners club.
