98 V70XC sounds like diesel V70-XC70

We've had a 1998 XC for about two years with no significant trouble. It has about 50,000 miles on it. Today, after sitting for three days, when my wife started it, it sounded exactly like a diesel. She said it ran fine the last time she drove it. It sounds to me like the noise (a loud tapping) is coming from the valve train. It is loudest at the top of the engine. Anybody got any thoughts on this? When we bought it used, it came with an extended warrenty that either just recently expired, or is about to in the next month or so (I'm going to check on that). It sounds bad enough that I definately wouldn't drive it. I'd be grateful for any advice or comments. Thanks, Joel

    It sounds like the lifters.
Did the noise go away after the engine warmed up? Then that is your noise.

You will find that lifter noise is a common problem on the 5 cyl engine, especially after a long rest, it seems like the oil galleries drain everything to the crankcase and that introduces air into the lifters. Once that happens it will take a while for oil pressure to displace the air.
At least that's what I have experienced with my 98 V70.
I believe there is an "O" ring that introduces air to the oil pump, severe lifter noise requires the replacement of that(those?) "O" ring(s). Search the board for this issue.

One way I was able to quiet the lifters for the last 6 months is by making sure the oil level is exactly at the top mark and then I add 1 pint more.
No more lifter noise since I have been doing this.

Be careful not to over fill your motor..... THis can lead to strains on the whole reciprocating assembly, thus hurting parts!

      YMMV!
