I have a '97 855 GLT and my light is on and I do need to fix it. However,
my problem is in the clockspring (otherwise known as steering reel) which is
inside the steering wheel itself. The part costs about $165 - $175 here, in Oklahoma. Labor - another $75. I am going to replace it myself once I get the money. Mine broke when I was re-aligning my steering wheel after changing
out the evaporator. Anyway, I do not know if the '93 850 would have the same part or not, but something to check into. You really need to have the VOLVO shop diagnose the problem for you (unless it is something as obvious as "Happy owner's" problem was) and then you can probably fix it yourself. Do not mess with the airbags, though.
Also, as far as I know for 1997 855, as long as the system detects a problem with ANY supplemental restrain system (SRS) part, none of the airbags will deploy should you have a wreck. This is what I was told by my Volvo dealer, so, do not count on that as 100%.
Hope this helps,
Max
