Que: Kink free extra hose for in-line trans filter & a decent non-synthetic fluid 850

DIY friends,

I am about to change the transmission fluid and install an in-line transmission filter (catch all the fine metal particles and etc.). Larry, on this board, mentioned to get the filter for power steering since it fits better and add an extra hose (upper cooling hose from a S80) to make the installation kink free.

Is the kink unavoidable without the extra hose? Can anyone tell me what exact part number that hose be on IPD or anywhere that sells the filter and the hose?

What would be a decent non-synthetic fluid? Also, is it bad to drain and add fluid, at the same time, while the car is running? That way I do not have to start and stop the engine too many times.

What is causing the kink? Is it a change of direction? You can always use brass elbows for this application. That would be the proper way to do it.

As for non-synthetic fluids, why not use a good synthetic, do it maybe once, or twice for the life of the car? I use AMSOIL synthetic ATF, I put it in about 4 years ago, and changed it out two years ago just because I knew I couldn't get all the old stuff out. After two years, the stuff looks like I put it in yesterday.

As for getting the ATF out, do it the way the Volvo techs do it as prescribed, which is to remove the return line, I believe the way you are also thinking. The 2-3 start ups required does no real harm.

Ronjon,
I ordered the hose by description from George at http://www.volvokeene.com/. He's nice to work with and reliable with decent prices. IPD has the filters.

I would not take all the trouble you are and then use non-synthetic fluid. Mobil 1
ATF is fine but I prefer Amsoil. Look at your total investment.

Do not remove the pan or try to drain other than what you flush out the hose. It is not worth the trouble. Starting and stopping the engine is no big deal and a lot less work for a good and complete change of fluid.

Larry

Thanks for the info guys. There are filters at bulkpart.com for $16 850

I will do the fluid change from non-synthetic to synthetic this weekend. George at volvokeene.com will be in on Monday for my filter hose question.

I found a site with same filter by Magnifine for $16 but no clamp or hose mentioned. I will get one from IPD to get an idea and then order more from bulkpart.com (they have three sizes, 5/16, 3/8 and 1/2 inch). Here is the address,
http://www.bulkpart.com/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MDITP&Category_Code=Inline

I can cut the upper cooling hose, trim it for the filter and insert the filter nozzles and then put clamps. Only thing I am not comfortable is to cut the hose.

You need the 3/8" size. The filter is 4-7/8" long tip to tip, and the ends take 3/4" of hose. The filter diameter is 2-1/4 to 2-3/8". If you can find a straight spot in your line for this 5" long, straight "bulky" section, then you may be fine without the extra hose. The extra hose lets you go out and back with gentle curves while finding a place for the filter. Another option is to splice in some 3/8" power steering hose if you need length. Mind the fluid flow direction (marked on filter)and consider that the engine is moving around a bit while the radiator is static.

1. Don't drain the fluid while the engine is running. You may want to drain and clean the pan, reinstall pan before doing the flush.

2. No kink if you have a big loop. Looks crazy but works. The filter (cooling line) is low pressure, and a kink will impede the cooling flow.

3. The non syn one I use is the one made by Chevron.. I also add BG transmission additive.. I do a flush once a year. It costs about $24 US with additive.
