Slide-out cupholder broken; replace the whole thing? 850 1996

Greetings,

My front cupholder spring-out arm broke off, and it looks like I won't be able to fix it. Has anyone replaced this entire two-holder piece before? Should I expect like $10, or $150?

Thanks in advance.

Slide-out cupholder broken; replace the whole thing? V70-XC70 1999

    hi Bricksters,

I just want to say that I have an 850GLT and V70XC, both cars experienced the same faith of these cupholder arms breaking off at the point where the arms pivot. So both times I was able to repair it by drilling a hole through the spot where the arm pivots, I used a screw to hold the arm in place. This isnot a perfect fix, due to the fact that the arm does not pivot as freely, but It sure does save me $40.00 and pI personally think it is stronger that stock. If you need a step by step instruction to do this, let my know on this board, and I will try to post it.

I recently replace mine for the second time on our '96 850. The part was around $40-$50 dollars at the dealer. The new one seems even flimsier than the old as the swinging arm now only attaches to one end. Volvo found a way to make that piece of junk cupholder a little cheaper to build.

As long as you have some torx bit screwdrivers or screwdriver bits it is an easy job.

The Volvo 850-SV70 Mark II cupholder.... 850 1996

I broke my first one, then repaired it with epoxy and nylon screws; it finally wore out at about 100k. The "improved" Mark II design is less likely to break if you lean over it with a cup inside but more likely to toss the cup. $40 for the part seems about right, better from one of the Volvo parts discounters if you need to order something else to make the shipping worthwhile. 5 minutes labor and a couple of Torx screws to change, it's very straightforward. (That would be about $100 installed from your Volvo dealer?)

Slide-out cupholder broken; replace the whole thing? _ Make an Insert. 850 1996

If you use the cupholder a lot - like my wife, who cannot travel without a caffeen supply at hand, you could add an insert to the cup holder.

I our case, I cut off the bottom of one of those "king" size Burger King cold cups. One of the huge cups that taper at the bottom in order to fit in a regular cup holder. I cut it off above the section that tapers, and inserted it in the bottomless cup holder. Her coffee cup fits into this insert.

(In our 740, I removed the top of the armrest and added a large plastic cup attached to a small piece of plywood to serrve as a cupholder. Cost far less than Volvo's solution!)

Welcome to the club. These cupholders were not designed to be used to hold cups, but rather to give a salesman a feature to talk about in the showroom. Mine has broken soon after I bought the car new and I had it replaced under warranty, though they warned me that that was the last time they would cover the cup holder. The part costs about $40 and is pretty easy to replace by yourself, but why would you spend $40 for something that will surely break again soon? That was my reasoning and I just left it broken. Every now and again I think of a "rubber-band-and-chewing-gum" way of fixing the broken part, but then the need for it goes away and I don't think about for another few months. Just pretend you have a car that didn't come with the cup holder and you'll be happy.

    Good luck.

Slide-out cupholder broken; replace the whole thing? 850 1996

You guys are killing me. I discovered mine a few days after buying my new-to-me 115k-mile 95, and I've just been thrilled with the ability to carry McDonald's coffee and bottled water at the same time -- as long as I don't corner, brake or accelerate too hard, of course. (Think RX-7's had cupholders?) I guess Volvo rolled the dice on a design that would just barely squeak through the warranty period.... and my car's previous owners never used it.

      :) Steve-o

Right, the cup holder works if you don't drive OR you don't put the cups in it. Otherwise either the cup flies out of it giving your upholtery a nice McBath or the cupholder breaks if you so much as nudge it the wrong way while the cup is in it. Great design! I wouldn't mind having a cup holder, but it is not a necessity for me, I guess. I've been driving long enough to realize that it is possible to drive and NOT have a beverage.

        Cheers.
