CD Changer Problems 850 1995

Hi Guys

Please help!

I've got a '95 850GLT with the standard Volvo head unit, SC-700. I'm wanting to add a CD Changer to this.

After doing a lot of reading on this forum, as well as on Volvospeed, I managed to find an Alpine CHM-601 CD changer. I imported a VOLALP adapter from the US (I live in South Africa)and connected the lot up, hoping to have instant CD access from the head unit.

Nothing!! All I get on the head unit when I press the CD button, is error code EEEE!!! :-(

I've checked everything that I can think of:
- The changer works when connected to its own head unit
- The yellow wire on the VOLALP is connected to a permanent 12V source
- The VOLALP is properly connected on both ends
- Disconnected the radio completely from the harness to reset it, reinstalled and reinitialized with the factory reset code

The changer gets power - as soon as I load the magazine, it picks up Disc 1, ready to play. It doesn't seem to get any command from the head unit though.

The EEEE error code comes up immediately on pressing the CD button, whether the changer is connected or not.

Please help!!

Are you sure the volalp adapter is the right one? I had to buy a new adapter to my alpine changer when I upgraded the head unit from an SC-810 to an SC-816.

I checked with Stinger (the manufacturers of the adapter) before I bought it, so I would assume they supplied the correct one. I hope!

It's been so many years already that I can't remember all the details, but I do recall that the first adapter I had gave me a LOT of EEEEs, but not always. I do recall complaining to the manufacturer about being 3/8 of a mile down the road before I had tunes. I do not recall if I wound up with a newer revision/model from the same unremembered manufacturer or from a different one.

I believe the newer revision can still get an EEEE but it retries immediately until a valid response occurs. Hardly perfect, but good enough.

Years ago I switched from an SC811 to SC815 and, as I barely recall, the 815 needed a fancier adapter than the 811 did. I think that's when I got into the EEEEs....
