SparkPlug Gap 850 1994

I can find hundreds of postings about what type of plug works best, but I cna find nothing about the gap.
I just bought OEM plugs (single electrode platinum) for my 850 Turbo, but I am not sure what gap to use. The new plugs have a gap which looks way to small. The Haynes manual say 0.028", but the old plugs I took out have a smaller gap than that, even though they are worn.
Any clues?

I gap most stock turbos to .026 assuming you do not have coil packs or upgraded ignition

What's the best way to gap a plug? I seem to have a rough hand with my needle-nose pliers, and could use a gentler approach.
