Found a 97 850 wagon, but private seller tells me has probs with electrical ...any advice? 850

Hi, I found a great car - minus the electrical problems the private seller has been telling me about.

Apparently they replaced the cd with a bigger cd changer and since then the battery seems to be draining when car is turned off, they have had it 'fixed' by a dealer, but now it is happening again.

I want to know if you have heard of similar probs. THe car only has 60K miles .. has been a suburban used car .... very good besides for that.

Do you know what causes this? Do you know the approximate price range of fixing the prob? I am trying to use this as leverage for bargaining the price down.

ALso, what do you think the value of the car is for a private seller?

Thanks!

One common problem on 850s is that that glove box door warps enough that the glove box light switch no longer turns off. This happened to my '96 850.

I fixed it by supergluing a nickel to the spot on the door where the glove box light switch touches. That was enough to properly activate the switch. I had put an ammeter in series with the battery in order to figure out what was causing the drain.

This is the only problem with my 850 I've been able to fix for a Nickel :).

Sometimes the fuseable link on the wiring behind the changer breaks, also check to see if the visor mirrors work ok, shut all the doors and see if the red light in the door jam is on, if thats all good then get a alternator reading, it needs to read at least 13.5 volts if so get a battery. As for the value, since you did not say it was a turbo and Im assuming it looks clean, A price from a private seller should be 8-10 grand, because a dealer will only buy one at 5-6 grand.

If you do a search, you will find that 850 batteries do not last too long, that might be the problem.

I had a current draw problem in our '95 855 base - incidently, right after a 6-CD changer was installed.

I put an ammeter in the battery circuit and pulled fuses until the current went down. Don't forget to close the doors to shut off the interior lights off.

I found the problem to be the glovebox switch - even with the bulb removed, there was a current draw.

Soon after that I had to but a new battery!
