Where is the serial number at on the engine. I am looking to see if my S70 has the newer design.
Appearantly 1266128 and higher have the new design, correct? How accurate do you think this is??

Is it the number on the silver bracket right on the front of the engine, right in front of the valve cover? Is there anywhere else that there is this number?

Stamped somewhere on the right hand side of the block (I think this
is the passenger side) and on a sticker on the timing belt cover.
Well, thats what alldatadiy.com says (which has the original
TSB that covers the t-belt and other technical data -- $25/year
to subscribe and highly recommended for the DIY'er).

Thanks everyone. I haven't had a chance to check yet, I was somewhat confused though because there is a stamp on the silver colored metal guard like plate that is on the front of the engine. the number is 127xxx yada yada.
Anyway, the build date is 1/98 so I am going to assume for now I have the old design. If it does turn up different I'll post to let you know, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

the serial number is on a white sticker placed on the right side of the engine.
If your car was built in late '98 and SN is 1266128 or higher it may have the new design.

My '98 v70 was built in 7/98 and SN is higher than the above number, so I am planning the have the t-belt changed at 90k just to be safe(presently 78k). I am not willing to go all the way to 105k ast the new design recommends.

Now I am totally stumped!! I have a build date of 1/98 but the serial # on the engine is 127xxx. What would you all say?? Old belt or New?? Any other way to tell??

Hi Doug,

since the concensus on this board about the'98 70 series, that the t-belt should be changed at 70k miles regardless of engine serial number, I took my late built '98 v70(july '98) to my local dealer for a tbelt change at 78K miles. After theservice manager typed the VIN # in the computer, he stated that my car might not need a tbelt change until 105k miles, but to be sure he had the service guy remove the tbelt cover and check. He said that my tbelt looked good, and that my '98 had the new design like a '99 with the mechanical tensioner, instead of the hydraulic tensioner. Apparently the mechanical one is gentler on the rubber belt thus lasting 35k more miles. He recommended replacement at 105K miles along with the mechanical tensioner, which is the recommended service for '99 and newer volvos.

I thought this was nice of my local volvo dealer and I plan to support them, by bringing the car in for the 105k miles service.

If I were you, I would have your volvo dealer or indie shop take the tbelt cover off, and see how the belt looks and also to see if you have the mechanical tensioner. If the belt has cracks, replace. If the belt looks good and has the mechanical tensioner you could probably go to 105K miles.

The TSB everybody refers too on this board, is put out by volvo and talks about adjusting/replacing the mechanical tensioner on late '98 models. Since the TSB does not specifically say to change the tbelt at 105k, just to be safe, everybody changes at 70k.
