Remote Control 850 1997

Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase a remote control for a 1997 850 wagon without paying dealer price ($100 + tax etc.)?

i opened my remote up and pulled up on a pin type of thing that hits a round piece of metal on the back of the remote and mine now works fine, also programming the remote can be done by sitting in the car with the doors unlocked and turning the car on position 1 and off again on the ignition 5 times and then hitting the lock button. if this doesnt work try getting one on ebay.-d

I, too, would like to know. Also, why can these fobs not be repaired? Surely, it would be more environmentaly friendly to repair them, rather that having to throw away one when it's broken and go buy another? What's so "green" about that? Volvo.....WAKE UP!

These things go for about $20-30 literally every day on eBay. I got only one with my car, and I'd like to buy one secondhand, but I'm not sure how to get it set up to work for me. Do I have to go to a dealer to have it programmed? If so, will I then get gouged, or worse yet, told to get lost unless I buy one from them new?

Thanks for the input, very much appreciate your taking the time to answer. Regarding reprograming. After a battery went dead, we just called the dealer and he gave us instructions over the phone, also have seen instructions posted on this web site. Something about turning the key five times on and off while holding the two buttons on the remote down all at the same time.

I bought my extra remotes off ebay last week. Paid 15 bucks for 2 remotes.
Programming can only be done at the dealer at a cost of approximately 35.00.
Not a bad price to pay in comparision to buying them from the dealer directly.
