I'm still searching for just the right V70 for me.

By looking at only a car's VIN, is there a way to tell if it is an R, a GLT, or Cross Country, or base model, etc?

    you can look at volvo's ownerconnection for more info.


    stock for stock

    a glt/cross-country should have single exhaust and an intercooler pipe running straight over the top of the engine...usually running 15" rims

    base should not have that intercooler pipe.

    r should have the intercooler pipe, should be at least 16", usually 17"...front spoiler different from normal models...

    I see you want a V70. I am looking for a 98. What do you think about its repair record. Are you satisfied that the car is not a lemon design? I see an awful lot of trouble about it on different WEb sites. Consumer Reports doesn't recommend it as a used car purchase...still I liked the way it handled and felt....

      Sailguy,

      My wife and I bought a '99 V70 XC (cross country) with 50,000 on it Oct. 2002. We now have 71,000 on it. We drive the heck out of it and have had no problems. We love it. I don't even want to drive my 740 anymore!

      i bought a v70 t5m and i've owned it since feb. it was not babied or cherished but driven by a mom with two kids.nothing too bad but a well fed interior ,curb and spoiler rash some misc.small stuff needed.bougth at 89k now has 94k.I LOVE THIS CAR !!so that's my opinion for what it's worth.

    If you can distinguish engines, then yes...digits 6-7 of the VIN.


    Volvo VIN decoder:

    Digit 1-3: YV1 (manufacturer code. YV1 = indicates Volvo)
    Digit 4: Series code (L = 850, etc.)
    Digit 5: Doors code (S = 4 doors, W = 5 doors)
    Digit 6-7: Engine type (55 = B5254S, etc)
    Digit 8: Emission type
    Digit 9: check sum
    Digit 10: year model code (T=1996, etc.)
    Digit 11: manufacturing plant (7=Sweden, Uddevalla, etc.)
    Digit 12-17: chassis serial number
