Now I've Done It! 850 1996

While removing one of the front turn signal units, I succeeded in breaking off one of the tangs on the slotted piece that holds the retaining spring for the unit. For now, I have the signal unit wire tied on but am unsatisfied with that arrangement.

Anyone have a suggestion for a fix. No, I don't want to buy a new headlight unit just for this!

I cursed at the engineering put into the turn signal lenses. If you don't know exactly what you're doing, it's very simple to crack off the tang. I used epoxy to hold the tang back on. Setting it is not the easiest thing in the world, you'll need a table, some proper lighting and some patience. It's been holding for about a year now, but i'm unsure of what will happen if i ever need to remove the assembly in order to change a bulb. Unless there's any other tips on the brickboard, i see an eventual replacement of the assembly in the future. There's only so many times epoxy can work

I share your sentiment. Although what they've done is clever and makes sense in the drawing room, it's always a mistake to design something so that a major piece (like a headlight) has to be replaced because of a problem with a smaller component.

After I'd done it, it was clear that the trick is to lower the spring before withdrawing the turn light. But the intuitive thing to do is raise it.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'll pass on the epoxy. At the least it requires removing the headlight assembly and I'm not confident of the repair. I'm considering using a second spring to attach the retainer spring to an anchor point. Then everytime I see it I'll be reminded to be more careful next time. These cars have more fragile plastic parts than I'm used to and I've broken a few.
