Can U believe it ? ... Auto-dimming rearview mirror S70 1998

Hi,

Ever since Volvo offered the auto-dimming rearview mirror on the S/V70 for the 1999 and 2000 models, I have been wanting to re-fit mine with it, but the costs
of $ 220 Cdn for the part and $ 100 Cdn for the installation kept me away.

Yesterday, I went to my dealership's annual once-a-year " Garage Sale " and I got the auto-dimming rearview for $ 39.99 Cdn ( If you don't believe it ( Who
can ? ), I might be able to scan the invoice for you ). And the parts manager is willing to install it for me for only $ 50 Cdn ( Getting it installed this Saturday morning ... takes 0.6 of an hour ). The unit is still sealed in the original box ( never been used, not damaged, ... ). The parts manager told me the reason for the crazy low price was that since Volvo don't make the S70 anymore, they are trying to get rid of most of the accessories for the S70.

The sale started at 9:30 am ... I didn't get there until 11:30 am, as I had some appointment earlier in the morning. The parts mgr told me that they had 5 of them. When I got there, there was only 2 left ( 1 sealed box and 1 open box ( the demo unit ) ).

Check my website next week, as I will take some digital pics of it when it is installed into my Volvo.

Do you think Don Docsteader would still honour the price you got. I would go to them, but I have less than a pleasant experience with their subsiduary, Volvo of Richmond. We eventually settled out of court. I have an S70 T5 and I think that is the only option missing.

I too am very dissappoint Volvo left out a lot of standard "luxary" features which even Saturns have. Adjustable intermitent wipers, battery run down protection, side mirrors that are not linked to the memory feature. Painted, not solid colour bumbers!!!!! Haunted electric locks. All that aside. I love driving this car. There is nothing as comfortable as a Volvo

As for Volvo dealers,,,,,,,well lets say I would put them at the extreme low end of reputable and I have bougght in Halifax, Ottawa and Vancouver, all the same.

      bdgates,

Sorry to hear about your problem with Volvo of Richmond. On the other hand, it isn't the first time I heard about " bad things " about them.

Don Docksteader is ok ... but I found Volvo of North Vancouver much better & their prices are much cheaper than Don Docksteader.

I totally agreed that the Volvo S70 is a very comfortable car, which is the only reason I am keeping it in my garage. Add to that is that it is a very safe car, especially for my young sister who is just learned to drive not too long ago. I drive it at night - why ? - It doesn't attract as much attention as say a BMW or Mercedes, especially with a young man behind the wheel.

As for the price of that auto-dimming rearview mirror, all I know is that it was a one-day sale. The best would be just to call them ( 604-325-1000 ) and asked them. I don't see any harm in doing that. I know for sure you won't get the 10% off the installation, like me, because in order to get that 10%, you got to booked the appointment on that 1-day sale.

Originally, I was to install this unit this Saturday morning, but something personal and more important came up, so I am re-booking it for the following Saturday. If you manage to get this unit at that exceptionally low price, and is going to install it, maybe you can arrange around the same time ( 10 am ), then we could sit down and chit-chat over coffee during 1 hours it takes to install it. If you want, e-mail me directly ( news94@hotmail.com ).

      Hope that helps !

Yes I am taking ALL my business to North Shore Volvo. The manager/owner there I somewhat trust, but the guys in the service department are really great and have done MANY little things for nothing.

I just asked Boston Volvo in MA, they can order one for $42.00. This is about $2 more than Dondocksteader Volvo. Dondocksteader Volvo doesn't have the item anymore (all sold out).

That was the US dollars. I need to do the math. Since it is an item that Volvo is no longer support. It may be worth it.

I just installed one of these on my Miata. You will love it! What's the part number for the Volvo mirror?

      kshaw,

I know I will love it. It is so stupid that Volvo wants to be a luxury manufacturer, but don't even give to their customers. In 1997, my cousin brought a brand new $32k Ford Windstar LX and it came with one as standard equipment. I paid more than $40k for my Volvo and it isn't even an option.

As per requested, the P/N for the Volvo is 9464006 - This is the part number that I got off the box. FYI, I am in Canada, so I am not sure whether it is the same one for the United States or not; although on the box, it said that it made in and come from Sweden / Ireland.

I will take some pics of it this Saturday night, if possible, when I get it installed on Saturday morning.

By any chance, would you happen to know if I can get one from Nissan for my '01 Pathfinder SE ?

      Cheers !

It's a replacement for your rear view mirror which automatically detects when it's dark and electronically dims the headlights from cars behind you. No moving parts like the first generation of these. The mirror turns slightly darker but you can still read the front tags on cars behind you but the headlights have no glare at all. The one I bought for the Miata also had a built-in outside temperature display (which the Volvo has already) and compass headings. Mine was a Mazda part but it was made by Donnelly. Visit their web site for more information http://www.donnelly.com. Donnelly is just of several suppliers for these.

Wow! Thanks for the answer. . . I'll look into it. I just sold my 92 mazda miata that only had 54,000 miles on it. I'll miss the car but it just wasn't safe enough.

          kshaw,

You are absolutely correct about the function. The Volvo ones is also made by Donnelly. It doesn't have the compass nor the temperature reading.

Unlike the one on your Mazda, the Volvo one is not the same one as the one you can buy from the Donnelly website. Looks like a specially-designed one just for the Volvo. My friend just brought a 2003 Mazda Protege5 and he brought this accessory for his new vehicle. It got the ones with the compass and outside temperature reading and he found that he had the same one as the one on the Donnelly website.

I went to the Donnelly website and might find out about the one that has the reversing camera with the images from it being shown on the built-in monitor below the mirror itself. This looks like a cool thing to have on my '01 Nissan
Pathfinder SE, especially when I am reversing in tight parking lot or/ backing down the boat ramp to launch my Jet-Ski.

Now I just wish Volvo made an auto-dimming mirror also for the driver-side outside mirror, like many luxury cars have it these days.

          Thanks,
