Timing belt./ Serp Belt - 1st time FWD V70-XC70 2000

Hello, just recently took the plunge into my first FWD Volvo, having owned 2 240's and 4 700/900 series. I have done several timing belt changes on the venerable B230, but this will be my first time on this engine.

How difficult will it be to change given previous RWD experience? I plan to follow the Bay 13 procedure. Should I do the tensioner also?

Thoughts and Tips greatly appreciated. Looking forward to the FWD experience, but a little scared by what I read hear can go wrong as compared to a RWD.

Tom

Hello! If you have never replaced a T-Belt on a FWD Volvo it can be very tough. Especially if the the car CVVT.The 2000 S/V 70's are equipped with a variable timing gear on one of the camshafts. Turbo or non-turbo determines what side the CVVT gear is on. There is a procedure to follow before you remove the belt from the gear. If you get it the timing marks wrong you can do some serious damage to the engine! I'll be here if you need more info.

Thanks, I got a few thousand miles left before it has to be done, but I want to start thinking about it and researching it now since it could be catastrophic if I screw it up.

My only suggestion, after watching Mr. Bay 13 do my 960's timing belt, is don't rush it. After you have the belt changed and before you but the covers back on, rotate the engine by hand to make sure the timing marks are properly set and the valves and the pistons don't collide.

Find a large vice for the tensioner and don't forget the plastic keeper, or Pac Man.

The sept belt is a PITA but be patient and you can overcome it. Note the routing because the short belt goes one way and the newer long belt goes another way.

The serp belt from the dealer is super expensive and the afternaarkets are cheaper. Get a spare and keep in the rear storage area.
