problems with adjusting wastegate setting? S70 1998

Hi-

Has anybody ever had any significant problems after adjusting their wastegate setting on an S70 (or 850) T5?

I have read about doing this process here on the brickboard for several years.

The pictures at volvo tuning are good:
http://www.vptuning.com/wastegate.pdf

Now IPD has some info on their web page:
http://www.ipdusa.com/pdf/wastegate_adjustment_94_02_turbo.pdf

IPDs web page suggests "you can safely raise this to 6-8psi. This will give almost instant boost production in response to throttle input". They then go on to say "do not exceed 8psi, it won't hurt anything, but performance will be reduced and you will get a check engine lamp..."

So I called IPD to ask some specific questions, and the guy I talked was very negative about doing this. "Doom and gloom, unpredictable wastegate response, not a precision part to begin with, all cars responding differently, no set psi is good for every car, potentially blowing up your engine" kind of talk.

So, has anyone with a T5 set their wastegate to 6-8 psi and had negative longterm results?

Thanks
Joe

I have adjusted it on both my R and 854t, both run fine, no spikes. I also use dual mbcs on R, run 18 psi range. It's a hit or miss thing, adjust 1 turn at a time and test to see. On the newer 99 up it usually causes problems/conflicts with newer ecu system.

Off topic - Your driveway looks just about exactly like mine - I have an '83 245 that same color and a '99 T5. What color is yours? Hard to tell with the lighting.

Anyway, your T5 should be running about 11-12 psi stock. I did the wastegate adjustment, and in conjuction with the TME exhaust, I'm not sure what it really got me other than higher boost spikes. I appear to be running a sustained 0.9 bar, with spikes to 1.1 bar (according to the boost gauge).

Next mod will be a manual boost controller. Once that's on, I'll dyno up to 17 psi to make sure air/fuel ratios will remain safe.

do you have the high pressure turbo? i drive an 854 t-5 boosted to 12 psi. i have a dawes device boost controller. not advisable for the low pressure turbo tho. the problem with adjusting the wastegate is that the ecu eventually adapts to the altered wastegate and puts you back to almost factory setting. the manual boost controller bypasses the ecu. you therefore need a REAL boost guage.
