AW4 or AW5 Transmission? How to tell? V70-XC70 2000

My mother has a 2000 XC wagon and having the transmission clunk issue commonly discussed on this board. I want to do a tranny flush but when reading the owners manual it says the AW5 takes special "gear oil" and not ATF. I know this may be a dumb question but what is the best way for me to determine which auto transmission she has? The shifter has 1-2-3-D-N-R-P so I assume it is the 4 speed automatic (AW4?) Is there a plate that lists the trans type on the car? I don't have the original paperwork that came with the car.

Thanks for the help.

Angus

AW4 or AW5 Transmission? How to tell? V70-XC70 2000

2000 XC has the 4 speed. Non turbo and "R" models had the 5. Dexron III is indicated for your box, however, synthetic is better. Volvo's fix for various problems with the 4 sp is a flush with Volvo synthetic. $16/litre.

Thanks for the replies!

Can I use a good synthetic rather than the Volvo stuff? Or is it better to "pay" it safe and use Volvo's overpriced fluid?

$16 x 16 liters too V70-XC70 2000

Volvos synthetic fluid flush works but not only is it $16 per liter, Volvo says use 16 liters to flush/fill with. One needs about 3 liters to do the final fill after several flushes.
