Slow Brake fluid leak on my T-5R?? 850

Hi All,

Has anyone experienced a slow brake fluid leak? I had to add about a small bottles worth over that last month. I checked at all four wheels and don't see any leaks. Initially I thought it was because maybe the brakes were wearing low, but I had to come back and add more, and more until the bottle was empty. I did see some slight wetness on some sort of block that the lines go to from the brake master cylinder. I don't know what that block is called. But it didn't look that wet to me. Any ideas? I haven't had any work done on the brakes or under the hood so I don't know why it would start leaking...

Thanks!

one very common problem on this model car is the bleeder srew at one of the calipers. take off all your wheels and check carefully that all the blleders are completely dry. its a 10 dollar part and because it happens so much they are stocked at all dealers.

    Joe,

I've probably got some bad news for you. That block you refer to is the ABS modulator unit, aka hydraulic pump, and it has probably failed. This is not a very common failure, but it does happen (it happened to me). Unfortunately the unit is not repairable, and the leak will slowly get worse. Also, since fluid is leaking out, air will slowly leak in to the system and your brakes will soften. You may also notice that when stopped at a light on an incline, the brake pedal will slowly sink down and you will have to re-pump it.

The really bad news is that a new hydraulic unit is about $1250-1400, plus labor to install. I tried the approach of adding fluid for a while, but it became a nuisance as it worsened, and I was concerned about brake safety when it was clear that air was getting into the lines. I ended up buying a salvaged unit for <$100 and it is working perfectly - a recommended approach.

    Gerald C

Thanks Gerald! Looks like I'm going to have to dump some more money... This car is so much fun to drive, but man is she getting expensive!!

you probably have a leak at the junction box, same thing happened on my 240. Don't just keep adding fluid, replace it.

I read somewhere you are suppose to do a brake fluid flush.
Moisture builds up and possible the moisture has evaporated or fluid is breaking down. So maybe you dont have a leak.
I'd check into the flush. Maybe its due
