Do I have to purchase an OBDII scanner to read the codes on a '94 850 turbo, or can this be done through the service port? If I have to purchase a scanner, are there any recommendations for a good brand?

    You don't need anything at all. The mechanism in pre96 850s are far more superior than any commercially available code scanners (Unless you have $~6000 to throw away for a VADIS computer). Go to Volvospeed and click on repairs/maintenance. In that page you'll find the directions to read the codes.

    You can read the codes without using the port or the scanner. There is a control module at the front of the engine. The instructions are on Bay 13 at volvospeed
