O2sensor replaced; check engine still on 850 1996

I replaced my front O2 sensor today with a universal one made by Bosch...the connection kit made the splice easy. I am a bit alarmed that the check engine light still has not cleared. My friends tell me that it may take a few start cycles for this to take place. Is this true? If not, does anyone know what checks can be done to make sure that the sensor is good. Thanks!

    Andy,

1st: Because your cas is a '96, you'll need an OBDII tool to clear your check
    engine light.

2nd: Do you know if your car has an air pump ? because the universal O2 sensors
made by Bosch (or others) are good ONLY for non-turbo, non-airpump engines.

Dennis, you were dead on. I took my car to auto zone today and they cleared the ce light. The light has not returned. I was surfing the net a bit, and it appears that the emissions faults lock in until reset. Thanks for your help.

What codes were you getting before you did the change? You can pull the ECU fuse or disconnect the battery for a minute and that should clear the light, unless the problem is still there. Is the "universal one" you installed a heated O2 sensor? I would recommend replacing both the front and back sensors at the same time and with the correct parts. Most people end up having problems with those "Universal Ones". The correct sensors are available at FCPGroton.com for $115/$108 each. Mike
