Musty Aroma when car first started... 850 1993

Hi all,

I've got a 1993 850GLT that I've been getting back into shape. Just hit 130K, bought is at 129K. When I start the car I get a strong Moldy/Musty Aroma for a minute or so. I've checked the forums and I found a reference to a possible trouble spot but this was on a different model.

Has any experienced this problem. I've sprayed deoderizer into the air intakes and vents in the car. No better.

Any suggestions appreciated. Not afraid to get my hands dirty.

Thanks,

Henryk.

After cleaning that area out, you can get some 'mold' killer from the dealer. They usually don't charge for it. It will kill any molds that are in that AC path. That happened on my 89 760T. It took 10 minutes..

You can also turn off the air conditioner a few minutes before
stopping the car. This allows the intake to dry out a bit if it
has moisture in it (from the cold air). The newer cars actually
continue to run the interior blower fan for a few minutes after
you turn off the car to dry out the intake.

pop the hood, upper left area of the engine compartment,
you will see three torx bolt hold up by wipers,

this is the cover for the air intake, you will need to
peel back the plastic cover to see the blower intake,

once peeled back you will see tons on debri and old leaves
and rotting junk, this may be the smell, being drawn
in through you ac vents, there is a product you can
spray in that vent to get rid of mold (forgot the name)

I took a shop vac to all the junk, without a filter
there lot a junk get down in there, no wonder evaps fail
all the time

Evaporators fail due to copper dust from blower motor windings. It gets blown on to evaporator and a chemical reaction between copper dust and aluminum evaporator errodes away the aluminum hence causing a leak.
