accessories/power from fuse box S40-V40

I'm interested in installing an amateur ham radio in my S40. Originally I thought I would tap directly to the battery because the radio can draw up to 15amps. But first I want to ask if it's possible to tap into the fuse box? I think there are 15 amp fuses in the fuse box so I assume it's safe draw 15amps from there without going directly to the battery.

Does anyone have any experience in installing radios or other such accessories and using power from the fuse box?

thanks
David

I agree with W1ZN. Go the battery direct route. It might be convenient to go the fuse box route but I believe that tapping into the fuse weakens the connection.

    What is your call OM?

My call is kf6asc. BTW would you happen to know if the "on glass" dual-band antennas work with the S40 rear window? I asked this a while ago but nobody knew the answer...

      thanks

I have yet to place an antenna on the Volvo window. I can't see why it wouldn't work. I have used them before with absolutely no problem on an Acura.
If you are asking if the window defroster would hurt it, I wouldn't worry.

Is there a reason why you ask ? Does the rear window have some sort of embedded metal which could cause a problem? Now I'm curious.

I read somewhere that "on-glass" mount antennas, or at least one particular brand, will not work on "passivated" glass. I have no idea what "passivated" glass is but the implication is that it may not work on certain types of glass.

BTW- do you (or anyone else) have any mounting hints for an ICOM IC-207H? There doesn't seem to be a clean place to mount it.

          thanks
          David

Passiwhatzit? Now you got me. I wouldn't know where to start. On the other hand doesn't Volvo have a cell phone package that they put into cars? Wouldn't they also use a "on glass" antenna? I've seen them on cars around here so they must be doing something for reception/transmitting.

207H is the separate unit with remote faceplate? Sorry to say but good luck finding a place anywhere on the dash. How about a separate arm attached to the center console ?
They are advertised in QST or CQ magazine

Are you on arrl.net forwarding service?

              Looked online and found this

              http://radioproshop.com/antennafaq.htm

Then looked on the car directly but could not find a reference to this type of glass on MY2000 S40. Maybe the glass isn't passivated afterall.

    Hi David,
I have installed a rig in my V40. I went right to the battery. It was easy. There is a pass thru, on firewall far left upper. It is a rubber device with several pass thru holes not used. You just snip off the end to open the path.
    Good luck,
    Craig W1ZN
