Rear Main Seal -- What's the urgency? 850

The rear main seal on my95 854 GLT Aut. (128k) has finally gone bad. The leak has been present for at least a month. I check the level almost every time I get in the car. The leak has been slow all along (about 1/3 quart every two weeks), and has not grown at all since it first appeared.

Here's the problem. I live in Mexico, at least 12 hours from the border. I have a new seal in hand, but I don't have an experienced Volvo mechanic nearby. I can drive the car about 3 hours to a Volvo dealer (that's been open for only a few months) to have them do it, or have a decent local shop do it, or keep an eye on the oil level and wait until I have an opportunity to drive back to the States to have a real (and experienced) Volvo mech take care of it (could be as long as 6 months).

I'm leaning toward taking it to the Volvo shop soon, but I'd like to hear some thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Rear Main Seal -- What's the urgency? 850

Eventually it will get worse. The worst part is where it leaks from, it was all over the underside of my car and all over the exhaust. Oil and high heat don't like each other and it creates smoke and could lead to a fire.

I'd get it done, even though it's a bitch to replace. 10 hours of labor to replace a $15 part.

Rear Main Seal -- What's the urgency? 850

Had mine replaced in December of '03. Started out slow as a drip, but within about a week had turned into a seep. I would drive home from work and put it immediately on ramps and crawl under and clean the weep hole and surrounding area. As soon as I could wipe it would begin to seep. I kept a close watch, but I had to take a trip prior to fixing. Before leaving I checked the level and after about 75 miles of interstate travel I ended up having to put in about a half quart. This is in my opinion a dangerous rate of loss. I would caution you to continue to check it as often as possible if you decide to wait a while, because it could at any time develope a larger leak around the seal. Make sure you check/clean your flame-trap which could possibly be the factor in the seal failure. You can find instructions on Bay13

Rear Main Seal -- What's the urgency? 850

If the leak is small and does not change, there may not be any urgency.

However, I looked at a low milage '95 850 that had almost all of its underside covered with oil. Much of the undercoating was cleaned away of softened.

I wonder how much damage had been done to the various materials, such as rubber and plastic, exposed to this coating.

I also wonder how long it took to do this, is it possible that it was one highway trip?

My little warped mind also speculates on weither or not this coating could start a fire.

Mine is leaking also. The volume is so low that it doesn't drip on the floor, just makes the bottom of the block wet. I'm letting it go for now. It's about $400 by an experienced mechanic, on his day off.
