Where can you get the plastic gear that everyone keeps saying is broke.I live in hendersonville,tn.Would it be cheaper to buy the cluster from a salvage yard.

A guy named Jeff Caplan makes gears for Volvos and other European cars. Do a search on the internet using his name and you will find his page where he sells them. I personally get them from wrecking yards because I live near very large, cheap ones full of Volvos. Makes me wonder if Volvos are really that great.

I just took my speedometer cluster to a speedometer repair shop today. The technician told me he has to custom-make the little plastic gear because they don't sell this part. He showed me a broken gear from another Volvo, it was really soft, like rubber. Just from looking at my cluster he guessed it was a 1994 Volvo 850. Perfect guess!!! Apparently he's been fixing a lot of these damn units. I guess Volvo just wants to sell us the entire instrument cluster. Anyways, the technician told me to pick up the unit tomorrow and it'll cost $65. It's a lot cheaper if you can take the cluster out yourself and take it to a repair shop.

Hard to find from what I've heard. Once saw them on eBay for a 240. Not sure if the same gear or not. Probably easier to get cluster from salvage and hope it doesn't break as well.....

Jeff Caplan can help you out, his product is far superior to anything else out there, including OEM VDO.
