How to remove new style trans. coupler? V70-XC70 2001

Hi All,

With the transmission fluid on my 2001 V70XC looking pretty brown (at 30k miles!), I'm looking into flush procedures. I've run into some good information from fellow bricksters, but the transmission line to radiator coupling style appears to have changed from that used on the 850. Instead of the clip you pop off (as shown nicely on the Bay13 site), the whole pipe slides into a largish diameter sleeve built into the radiator, and there is a plastic split cylindrical insert that fits between the radiator sleeve and the pipe itself.

So, how to remove this beasty? Presumably, the split sleeve is removed first, but right now I'm not going to just yank it out with a pair of pliers! Any special tools required? Also, any "consumables", such as O-rings, clips, etc. that should be changed when disturbing this connection?

Thanks in advance!

Greg

The green plastic thing is the retainer, which has to be squeezed together to remove the hose. I like wrapping it with twine just at the end near the hose coupling to compress it and to free up one hand. There are two o-rings on the hose end but I've never had to replace them. Push the hose in first to be sure the retainer is not caught in the internal groove in the radiator fitting then just wiggle, pull, wiggle, pull to get the hose out with the retainer kept squeezed together.

Remove the coupler as Larry describes. Get about 3 feet of 3/4" ID heater hose and attach it to the collar on the rad. Drain 2 qts out at a time into a graduated container. Replace 2 qts at a time with fresh fluid (12 to 14 qts), or until fluid coming out of rad is clear red. Works every time.

Keefus,
Re: Flow direction from upper transmission cooling hose. Are you sure about the flow being out at the radiator? My S80 is that way but that's a different transmission. The older S70s flowed out of that hose. BTW I use a one inch clear plastic hose for the S80. Larry

Glad I checked with you guys - did Volvo reverse the direction of fluid flow through the radiator? I seemed to remember on 850s that it used to enter at the top of the radiator and exit through the bottom.
