1998 V70 T5M: Electric Door Lock Malfunction V70-XC70 1998

Any door lock experts out there? Here are the symptoms:

Passenger (right) side door lock. The door will lock from either the driver or passenger switch or the remote, but will not UNlock from either switch or the remote.

I know that the door panel will have to be removed, and I am comfortable with that. I have lost count of the number of times I have done that with my 84 and 88. Beyond that, is this likely a DIY, or am I looking at a shop visit?

Any words of wisdom and experience? TIA.

There is a tiny little red plastic lever inside the lock that breaks when you try to unlock the doors and somebody is trying to open the door at the same time, I documented the removal, repair and installation of the lock in volvospeed.

Vitor, I neglected to mention that what you described was precisely the failure mode. A passenger tried to open the door, I realized it was locked, and tried to inlock it while he was "working" the handle. I DID see (and print) your detailed proccedure concerning the Red Evil Plastic Lever (REPL), and I am fairly certain that I will performing that repair very soon.

Thanks for replying.

I have the factory 1998 V70 wiring diagram. All 4 lock motors are wired in parallel; polarity of the applied power determines direction of motor rotation, and therefore, lock or unlock action. Since the Lock function works OK, I think it's safe to say that all of the wiring and connectors, as well as the motor, are good.

However, according to the drawing, some models (it does not say which) include limit switches integrated into the lock assembly. The limit switch turns off power to the lock motor whan the actuator reaches the end of its stroke. This prevents the motor from overheating if a child holds down the switch for a long time. You may have a bad limit switch, or one with worn or dirty contacts. You will have to remove and disassemble the mechanism to find the switch and clean or replace it. You might be forced to replace the entire assembly if the switch is not readily serviceable.

Thanks for the most excellent analysis. I have pretty much acknowleded that the door panel is coming off. Did it many times on my 84 and 88, so I am not uneasy about it.

If you would like a copy of the factory locks schematic, send me email at "n0v8or@cox.net". My book covers both the S70 and V70. There are 5 pages, which includes the component location drawings. Scanned and converted to JPG, each will be about 200Kb.

Try to find a wiring diagram for the car. The newer ones have relays associated with each door lock/unlock and I had one go bad on my 2000 S80. A lot easier to swap relays around for troubleshooting than going into a door. With your multiple failure points, a door is less likely.

OOPS!! In my haste I always neglect to check the archives before posting a query. There are many similar entries there, so I will digest those first. Nevertheless, feel free to comment; just don't yell at me for not checking the archives.
