95 850 Pulls To Right 850 1995

My 1995 Volvo 850 GLT with 111,000 miles pulls to the right! When I purchased the car 3 years ago, I had new tires (Dunlap D60 A2) put on and had it aligned. I soon noticed the sharp pull to the right- so much so that my hand gets tired very quickly trying to hold it straight on the highway.

Since the new tires were added, I've had the tires balanced a couple of times, rotated, switched from left to right, aligned again by the same company and aligned by another company- all to no avail.

The pull is at all speeds, at all times. I'm at my wits end! Other than alignment and tires, is there anything that would cause it to pull?

Thanks,

Chris

This happened with my '94 850 sedan as well - but pulled to the left. Same tires, same alignment and balancing deal to no avail. Turned out to need a right balljoint replacement. Might be the same situation on yours - maybe have the left balljoint evaluated. Once the balljoint was replaced, there was no more pulling to the left.

How about a bad brake caliper?

A good body shop can measure the body and suspension to see if it is not straight.

I have a friend that has a 1938 Chevrolet hot rod that he has driven for 20 years. The car ate tires. He had it aligned at shops all over America and twice in Europe. He even competed in One Lap of America with the car.

Two years ago he took the body off to do a partial rebuild. He found out that the front portion of the frame (from a Monte Carlo) was welded on with one side one inch shorter than the other. Problem solved.

You may not have any accident damage- we had an 850 (95 854GLT) do this after a rear main seal replacement. The tech didn't get the subframe bolted on square- that pushed one lower control arm forward and one rearward, and even with alignment that fell within specs (3 different shops!!) it always pulled right. Worse at speed on the highway. This could certainly be your problem, especially if you know the rear main was done, or the trans was out for any reason.
All they have to do is loosed the 4 big corner mount bolts and straighten the subframe.
Good luck!

I recently bought a '94 Chevy Lumina van from a HIGHLY reputable dealer. It pulled to the left terribly, and it was a hard and steady pull. Turns out the vehicle had a bent control arm and spindle from collision damage. The dealer promply refunded all my money once I figured this out. In a collision, the frame can easily be bent, rendering the car useless for alignment. You may have just a bent control arm or spindle, or the frame holding both could be bent, making it much harder to correct (You'd have to straighten the frame). Go over the car carefully to make sure you don't see any signs of collision repair (paint overspray, very new looking paint, or just sloppy workmanship on body panels).
