rear brakes wearing very slowly 850 1994

My 850 has 105K miles and the rear brakes dont seem to worn as much as I would expect. The pads seem about 20-30% worn - plenty of padding left. The rotors are not worn down much but are somewhat 'grooved' and not shiny like the front rotors.

I'm concerned they arent adjusted properly or that the calipers are not working as they should. The rear brakes do work to some extent - I am unable to manually turn the wheel when the brake pedal is depressed.

I replaced rotors and pads on the front brakes around 75K and the car stops ok.

Any advice appreciated.

The rears on my 850 wore very slowly. I did not have to replace them until I was at 110K or so and there was still pad left. If the fronts are working okay then I would not be concerned.

rear brakes wearing very slowly 850 1994

I had a hunch that the rear brakes on my S70 weren't performing as well as they should have been and i had the same symptoms as you. The disks were not as shiny as the front ones and but did heat up to the point of still being able to touch them after a half hour of driving. Not good enough for me, i suspected that my front rotors were warping since they were doing 90% of the work. (Later i realized that the front rotors were warping due to overtorquing, not heat, ahh the joys of owning a Volvo.) I eventually took my Volvo to an end-of-warranty-inspection to the CAA and they told me that the braking distribution was normal. I didn't buy that, i knew they could have better performance. When i visited my dealer to do the last repair jobs before the end of warranty, i explained to him that i didn't feel that my rear brakes were working to potential. He tried to talk me into a pad-disc change but i declined. However he did take the brakes apart, cleaned them and re-installed a new pin-kit. The brakes worked to their full potential from that day on and the disks look as shiny as the front ones. Forget about being able to touch them after moderate driving. The part number is 217831 and is refered to as a Mounting kit. Price $23.80 CAN as of Aug/01. Hope this helps.
