Finally Replaced Evaporator -- DIY!! 850

Well me and two friends replaced the evap today. Man what a PITA!!! I took a lot of pictures, but I missed some key ones because it got late and my helpers needed to leave. I'm looking for a free place to post them, I'll post the link when I find a place.

Again, thanks Kevin for all of your help, your directions were very helpful! I don't think I would have been able to do it without your help.

Congratulations Scott!

Wow, it's really nice to know you've tackled that one.
If the pictures and the written material is not very big (<1.5Mb) I can happily host them on my web site for some time. E-mail me if you want me to host them. My email address is

Thanks for the offer, but all of the pictures combined were rather large. So I posted them on picturetrail.com. If you'd like to see them goto http://www.PictureTrail.com/gid1858370

Did you replace the dryer also? If so, how difficult was this part?

I haven't done it yet. I have to replace the compressor still. I got killed this season on the A/C, both the compressor and evaporator had decent sized leaks. I'm most likely going to let a shop do the receiver/dryer because it can't be exposed to regular air very long or you'll ruin the receiver/dryer. And the system has to be put on a vacuum immediatley after you open the system and install the new receiver/dryer. So I'll have them put the receiver/dryer in and properly vacuum and recharge the system. It's funny though, the receiver/dryer is probably the easiest part of the A/C system to replace and I'm paying someone to do it!! But after doing all this work I would hate to ruin the new compressor or evaporator because the receiver/dryer wasn't doing its job properly.

Does your internet provider give free web space? A lot of them seem to.

The evaporator is an aftermarket one. It was such a pain to reinstall the high pressure side pipe (small one) because the angle wasn't quite right on the aftermarket evap itself. And the pipes have to go absolutley straight on or they won't go on. Otherwise the evaporator looked exactly like the OEM one. I bought the aftermarket one from www.thevolvosite.com, I was impressed by their service and price.
