95 SRS cover on passenger side buckling from age / can it be replaced? 850 1995

My 850 wagon has been a pretty good trooper for the 153K mi we have been together... cosmetically the SRS (airbag) cover is buckling from age (or like a old floridian - too much sun), can it be easily replaced.... couple other items: 1)leather seats weren't maintained, anyone know a good fitting seatcover brand that isn't outlandish and doesn't look like my grandads pickup? 2)a good reference book for the volvo, what is better than Haynes? 3) how hard is it to replace the bulbs in the shift indicator in the console - a mystery to me now? 4)driver seat tilt motor runs but no tilt - is this hard or easy repair? Thanks, just discovered Brickboard and have been waiting on these things for years as the dealer always wants a small child in payment for these repairs!

95 SRS cover on passenger side buckling from age / can it be replaced? 850 1994

Volvospeed Bay 13 has descriptions and pictures to repair most of these problems. I just replaced the light bulb in my shift indicator. There were a couple of screws that held the console in place under the cigarette lighter/ change pocket that weren't described in the instructions.

    Good luck

95 SRS cover on passenger side buckling from age / can it be replaced?....YES 850 1995

Volvo makes a replacement kit for that passenger airbag cover. To do it, you or someone has to remove the upper dash pad with airbag, remove airbag and replace the cover. I've done it many times and it's not really THAT bad. I wouldn't advise glueing the cover down as some might suggest as IF and when you might actually need it (say when it's deployed in a bad accident) and IF that's important to you (?), then it might not deploy correctly as designed IF glued as I'm sure that no one here has actually tested it for that. It's your car and your passengers so the decision is yours. My cars are too old to even have airbags and I've never need them nor do I worry so what would I do? My wife's afraid of being in cars with airbags because she's one of those petite women (weighs less than 100 lbs) who are sometimes worse off with them.

If you look under the air bag cover you will see a metal plate. I could be wrong, but I think that this plate hinges up toward the windshield when the bag deploys - it certainly does not shoot up into the passenger's face!

Consequently, you can glue the cover down with just about anything that works as long as you do not get adhesive in the seam around the plate. (this same advice can be found on another board, tendered by a Volvo technician)I used double-sided foam tape. The first try peeled off as the foam under the cover deteriated, the second try worked. There is a repair kit available.

Roughly - to remove console - remove screws that hold the rear of the console by prying up a small cover in the armrest compartment. Pull the change holder out and remove the screws that hold the front of the console. Apply the emergency brake and move the shift lever forward, remove the piece that fills the end of the shifter slot. You should now be able to lift the console but you probably have to disconnect the wires to the cigarette lighter. I had my wife hold the console up while I changed the bulb.

I THINK that these directions are reasonably accurate!

    REPLACING BULB AT SHIFTER...

I have a 1998s70glt automatic and i cant tell you all the details but the bulb is very expensive for its size($4.00 at dealers).

I just remember taking off almost all the parts of the center console until i got to it.I dont think I had to remove the CD/Radio but just about everything else below it.

Good Luck...wish I kept better notes as to the procedure.
