Looking at a 97 s40, in australia for 20k AUS, help? S40-V40

Well,
It's come time to upgrade from my 740 (i'm keeping it tho, :)), and have been looking at various cars, but just saw an s40 today for 20K, and thats in my "price range" (remember, AUS dollar!), however, being in australia with bloody rough roads everywhere, i'm a little dubious, as i remember from a while back, the s40's having lots of problems.... However, how true is this? How many problems do the s40's have? Are they serious, or would i be able to live with them? I don't mind buying an s40, so long as it's reliable and will live as long as my 740 (up to 225k's and still going strong)....
Any advice anyone? Please :)
Thanks in advance!
Aaron

the s40 is not a real volvo , as your 740 is...

the 40 series was built in holland , based on a japanese car...

If id where you id be looking at an 850 or maybe even an S70..

Larger cars , and more reliable when it comes to lasting many miles.

The 40 series also have the 4 cyl engine which was not a success for Volvo..

Id go with the 5 cyl 2,5 engine in 850 or s70..

The s40/v40 is not as reliable as the real volvos are..

Sure the 850 and S70 all have their issues , but when it comes to lifetime on the enginge well its hard to find other cars as good as this one.
